November is one of my favorite months ever. Not only is my birthday in November, but it is also manatee awareness month and manatees are one of my very favorite animals.

Ironically, my other favorite animal is an elephant. Bet you didn’t know that manatees are more closely related to the elephant than any marine creatures!

Many people don’t always understand my love for manatees so I thought I would share some amazing facts about them.

They are slow-moving, inquisitive and harmless mammals that live off of seagrass. Sadly, this year alone, Florida has already recorded the most deaths of manatees to date.

Part of that is the algae on the sea grass they are consuming. Another reason is boaters who travel at unsafe speeds and are careless.

Right now, they are listed as a threatened species, but many wildlife experts think they are on their way to being endangered.

Manatees have no natural predators so their lifespan can be long, more than 60 years. It is devastating that an animal with no natural predators is classified as threatened when this is a direct result of humans!

Since it is challenge Monday, I want to challenge you to create manatee themed art. Paintings, photography, pottery, you name it.

We want to see all art that focuses on these beautiful, majestic mammals.

Still unsure how to incorporate manatees into your art?

Well, did you know that manatees are thought to be the inspiration behind mermaids? So, maybe you can do some sort of mash-up combining the two.

You know there are no rules when it comes to these challenges, so send your manatee art to us at Her Blaze  so we can share your art with all of our supporters!

I found this lifelike painting called “Manatee River” which was painted by Robert the Artist.

Not only does he show the majestic manatee, he also captured much more of Florida’s amazing wildlife.

He would be a great artists to submit his work for this week’s challenge!

Another really creative idea is shared below. It is handmade pottery by Amanda Proctor.

Both Amanda and Robert have created stunning art and are just two examples of what this week’s challenge is all about!

The late, great, David Bowie said, “if you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further in the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.”

This is how we should all feel about protecting manatees but this is also how all you amazing artists should feel as well.

Push the limits. Think outside the box.

After all, that is what being an artist is all about!
