Felipe Guzmán

Artist Bio

Hi, everyone! I’m Felipe. I like studying languages, eating hamburgers, reading and writing poetry, playing the guitar in my spare time and folding origami. I can speak three languages: Spanish (native), English and Chilean Sign Language. I’m also a big fan of Star Wars and The Beatles.

I was born in Valparaíso, Chile, in 1995. I discovered origami when I was in primary school, but I left it. Fortunately, I rediscovered this beautiful art in 2019. Since then, I’ve been folding, learning and improving my origami skills up to this day.

In 2014, I started studying English-Spanish translation at university. However, my life wasn’t going that way. In 2017, I discovered Chilean Sign Language (LSCh) and the following year, by chance, I had to teach math to a deaf teenager. That year, I had to use all my sign language knowledge and creativity to teach him rules of arithmetic, geometry, algebra, etc. It was a challenging job, but I succeeded in it, and, most importantly, I discovered that I love pedagogy and I’m good at teaching.

Currently, I live in Santiago, Chile. I’m happy studying special needs pedagogy, which became my real vocation. Soon, I will specialize in deaf people education and become a sign language interpreter. To achieve real inclusion in Chile is one of my life’s goals. In the future, I plan to teach origami to deaf, blind and disabled people in general. Also, I will use origami as a tool to teach my students all kinds of subjects. For me, origami, education and inclusion match perfectly.
